Position summary

The Photonics Engineer is responsible for the, assembly and performance validation of photonic components and subsystems, including fiber-optic interfaces, waveguide-based devices, and packaged photonic assemblies. This role defines assembly and test strategies, and analyzes performance data to guide design and process improvements. The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on assembly with cross-functional collaboration.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on device assembly, of frequency conversion and phase modulation devices.
  • Translate device designs and performance requirements into assembly procedures and travelers.
  • Establish tolerances and control metrics to ensure repeatability and yield.
  • Develop and maintain experimental and measurement setups including software and hardware developed internally and externally
  • Develop and maintain SOPs for key processes.
  • Support prototype builds, integration, and troubleshooting.
  • Characterize prototype and production devices.
  • Collaborate with the Technology and Design teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, scalable, and cost-effective.
  • Investigate and resolve product issues encountered during production or customer use.
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of products and processes.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as business needs evolve, consistent with the scope of the role.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or 5+ years of hands-on experience).
  • Strong foundation in optics, photonics, or electro-optics.
  • Experience with optical test equipment and laboratory practices.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

Preferred qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with fiber pigtailing, fiber optic frequency conversion and electrooptic modulation.
  • Experience working in production or manufacturing environments.
  • Lean manufacturing experience.
