Position summary
The Photonics Technician is responsible for the precision assembly, alignment, and testing of photonic components and subassemblies, including fiber-optic assemblies, waveguide housings, and waveguide facets. This role supports R&D, prototyping, and production by executing detailed assembly and test procedures, maintaining high workmanship standards, and ensuring reliable device performance. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with delicate optical components and test equipment.

Key responsibilities
- Prepare and assemble photonic and electro-optic components and subassemblies according to drawings and procedures.
- Polish fiber optic and waveguide assemblies.
- Perform optical, electrical, and mechanical testing using established test and inspection setups and equipment.
- Set up, operate, and maintain laboratory and production equipment.
- Kitting sub-assemblies for production.
- Follow assembly travelers, SOPs, and work instructions with high attention to detail.
- Accurately document assembly steps, test data, and observations in manufacturing or lab records.
- Support continuous improvement of assembly and test procedures.
- Follow laboratory, and safety protocols.
- Support prototype builds and production runs under engineering guidance.
- Maintain tools, fixtures, and a clean,and organized work environment using 5S standards.
- Assist with upkeep and basic maintenance of assembly and test equipment.
- Support inventory tracking, revision control, material handling, and basic MRP related tasks as directed.
- Basic machining of parts, when necessary.
- Train new operators on key processes.
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned as business needs evolve, consistent with the scope of the role.
Required qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to manipulate and assemble small, fragile components.
- Ability to follow detailed procedures, drawings, and instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation practices.
Preferred qualifications
- Associates degree or bachelors in optics or photonics related field.
- Experience assembling electro-optic devices or fiber-optic systems.
- Precision assembly experience.
- Familiarity with optical alignment or fiber polishing.
- Experience supporting manufacturing or production environments.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing practices.
