Position summary

A Scientist at AdvR works within the Technology (R&D) group to expand AdvR’s capabilities by contributing to innovation around waveguide fabrication, evaluation, and/or packaging. As a part of the Technology group, the Scientist will contribute to the execution of the AdvR technology roadmap by performing challenging experimental tasks involving nonlinear optics and electro-optic modulation. These tasks will be performed in collaboration with both the Technology and Delivery
(Production) teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of senior technical staff, develop unique experimental capabilities that enable development of new waveguide and electro-optic technologies.
  • Evaluate waveguide-based devices for their electro-optic and nonlinear performance.
  • Generate high-quality data to test experimental hypotheses, ensuring results that are accurate, reproducible, and defensible.
  • Contribute to internal and external reports that are reviewed with senior technical staff.
  • Work with the Delivery team to support unique measurements or experiments that may be required for delivery.
  • Work within AdvR’s theoretical framework to support experimental results.
  • Support the sales team through technical customer interactions, when appropriate.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as business needs evolve, consistent with the scope of the role.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Physics, Engineering, or related field.
  • 2+ years demonstrated experience in an optics or photonics R&D setting.
  • Experience with optical waveguides, fiber optics, RF photonics, and/or laser development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate with experts and nonexperts.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Due to the nature of the work and applicable regulations, this position requires U.S. citizenship.

Preferred qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Physics, Engineering or other related field.
  • 5+ Years demonstrated experience in an optics or photonics R&D setting.
  • Knowledge of quantum optics, quantum light characterization techniques, and photon entanglement generation.
  • Knowledge of electro-optic modulators and their characterization.
  • Experience with waveguide fabrication processes, including contact lithography, PVD systems, and wet chemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience with instrumentation control via Python or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience with proposal writing, conference presentations, and/or peer reviewed publications.

Reporting structure

This person will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer and will work closely with other personnel in the technology group. No direct reports.
