Business Development Manager – North America

My role at Hawthorn Photonics is to work closely with customers across North America to help identify and develop advanced photonics solutions that meet their technical and commercial requirements. I bring a strong background in optics, materials science and electro-optic technologies, alongside hands-on experience across research, development, manufacturing and customer support.

Main areas of expertise

I have a BSc (Hons) in Physics with Astronomy from the University of Surrey. My studies encompassed research in astronomy, spectroscopy, interferometry, and quantum physics, equipping me with the analytical and problem-solving skills essential for my role at Covesion. My technical expertise allows me to interpret and communicate complex scientific concepts effectively, helping customers navigate our specialised PPLN solutions with confidence.

Main Areas of Expertise

My main areas of expertise include non-linear crystal-based waveguide fabrication, packaging, characterisation and testing, as well as electro-optic modulator development, testing, packaging and production support. Having worked extensively in both R&D and manufacturing environments, I understand the practical challenges customers face when integrating photonics technologies into real-world applications.

I earned my BSc in Physics from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, before beginning my career at Los Alamos National Laboratory. My academic and research work focused on optics and materials science, including projects involving single-crystalline SiC nanofibres and XUV diffractive imaging.

In 2016, I joined AdvR, Inc. in Bozeman, Montana, where I gained hands-on experience across nearly every stage of the company’s device development and manufacturing processes. Much of my work focused on electro-optic modulators, spanning production, R&D and after-sales technical support. Today, I enjoy bringing that technical expertise into more customer-focused conversations, helping organisations implement photonics solutions that support their success.

Hobbies & Interests

Living in Bozeman, Montana gives me direct access to many of my favourite outdoor activities. I spend as much of my free time as possible camping, hiking, skiing, biking, fishing and hunting with my wife and son.
